Moss Grows Fat on a Rolling Stone

  • July 26, 2005
Yesterday saw me spend a total of almost eight hours at a Thomson Prometric Testing Center to take the 4-hour GRE. I had to wait 3.5 hours while the remote IT people fixed a "computer problem". It wasn't all bad, though. I grabbed a bite to eat at a gas station nearby, crammed some more useless vocab, and listened to other test-takers chat while they waited patiently with me. In the end, I pretty much aced the math section and did so-so on vocab, which is just a little worse than I expected. Since the computer can't grade the written section, I have to wait 10-15 days for those results, but I feel generally good about them.

Now I resume the task of setting up the server to run my application at OSP. My major hangup at this point stems from the fact that the server is "virtual" and runs Linux. To make a long story short, the server virtualization software can't handle Linux's clock mechanism fast enough, so the clock on the virtual machine runs about 60% its normal speed, losing about 20 minutes per hour. Needless to say this is bad, but I keep hitting walls trying to fix it.

Matt and I keep playing racquetball at the CRC, and I'm still enjoying it a lot. I need to get some gloves to help my grip, and goggles are looking like a good investment.
