I found this guy on the way to work yesterday.

In better news, I have discovered a support group for my JPop addiction. It provides torrents of tons of videos, with many in their full MPEG2 glory. I can also hear some of the harder-to-find mp3s from this genre of artists. Purchasing is another feat, though, as Japanese CDs on Amazon are usually between $30-50, and eBay prices can range from the usual $15 to the crazy $40, even for used CDs and before shipping is added.

On the other hand, since I've noticed that Japanese CDs tend to use much more of the disc, maybe it's worth more $$ ... just not that much. Namie Amuro's "Style", to which I've been listening (see the Audioscrobbler for evidence) runs about an hour long. Ayumi Hamasaki's "Rainbow", which is one of my favorite albums in the genre, is a full 74 minutes. Whereas we listened to the entirety Dark Side of the Moon on the way from Tech to Wallace BBQ in south Cobb*, I drove all the way from Marietta to Carrollton on Rainbow. American pop albums (excluding compilations) tend to last from 40-50 minutes, which is considerably shorter.

*This was quite freaky. We popped in Matt's DSotM CD as I was pulling out of the deck at Tech and the final track ended about 5 seconds after I pulled into the spot at the restaurant. Then, I popped in The Killers' "Hot Fuss" as I left Marietta for the same destination on Saturday, only to have it end just after we arrived ... again! I tell ya, that's some dang good bbq.

somehow it doesn't seem fair that your counter-jpop example was released like 20 years before cds came out

if we're talking about about straight-up disc-length you might want to check out wilco, the mars volta, yo la tengo, or the new sufjan stevens =)
