My rank on Technorati is 123,789. I've recently been drooling over sites that do simple things well. One such site, Popup ImageRocketboom is home to Amanda Congdon, whose artform I will now disrespectfully reduce into the phrase "hot chick reads nerd news." It's like Tina Fey on the internet. Her idea is relatively simple and probably takes about an hour a day to produce, but it's so unique that I am compelled to keep up. The bandwidth necessary to host a new 20MB file daily isn't free, but I'd imagine it's worth it to her, since it seems she is building a career as an actress and this can only help her.

Jen linked me to a vlog post by Zach Braff being a typical goofball, and I wish more famous personalities would do the same; this sort of personal interface with your fan base can only strengthen their love for you as a famous person. I know because I'm famous, and the millions of people who pour into Hydrous daily have told me in uncountable emails that they love how brutally honest I am. You all suck.

If you're famous and you reach out to your fans in personal forms like blogs (real ones, not just fake ones that say "I really love being on tour, and my fans are great"; I want things like "I love being on tour but it really sucked that time I was in Atlanta and my shoe fell off. Some of you in the front row may have noticed as I kicked the shoe at your faces.") or vlogs, they will feel that you're much more accessible. Thus, they will do things to please you because they think you might actually notice them. If I look at Natalie Portman and I think "she's hot, I wonder if she has a site", I don't go to her site with the intention of writing a love letter to her and expecting a reply. I want to find wallpapers or something equally typical. However, if I find an intimate description of how her attire wasn't fitting properly at the last VMAs she hosted, I can easily leave some clever comment about her astounding intellect and maybe she'll read it and reply with a simple "thanks, courtarro", thus making my month. I'll then be required to attend every one of her movies twice for the next year. See how this all works?

I'm a big fan of Neil Gaiman's journal. I love the little anecdotes he puts in about his family, especially his youngest daughter, Maddy. He also responds to questions/comments from fans, some of which are absolutely hilarious.
