Barack on Stage

  • April 18, 2007
Saturday saw 20,000 Atlanta residents attending a political rally for Barack Obama. Supposedly it was the largest political rally ever held in Atlanta. Obama's speech was well-spoken, and he progressed through the various democratic points: universal healthcare, improved education, leaving Iraq, etc. It seemed that very little of the content would be seen as separating the crowd, so there wasn't much detail, and he didn't go into the more divisive topics like abortion or stem-cell research.

At one point he made a jab at his most common criticism: experience. He said something to the effect of (paraphrased) "There are some who say I don't have enough experience, but in 2000 we elected someone with plenty of experience and look where it got us." and (direct quote) "I'm not sure that's the type of on-the-job-training that [the people] want me to have. I've been in Washington long enough to know that Washington needs to change."

Ha, I think you must've heard the same speech we heard in Oakland. Albeit from a much better vantage point (couldn't see him at all...). I don't know how I feel about him being so non-divisive-- a lot of what he says seems great and true and well-spoken and kind of generic and obvious

Is it weird that I was immediately struck by the diversity of the crowd? A far cry from being one of the only three foreigners in a town of 16000 Japanese...
