Core Memory

In the center of this photo is a core memory module. I found this to be a fascinating concept because it's so simple: tiny ferrite rings each hold a single bit of data, laid across a grid that provides addressing and read/write lines. I photographed a 16x16 module, capable of storing 32 bytes of data, at the Computer History Museum.
