Wes and I tested out the new Mario last night, as a two-player co-op. It's a lot of fun, and definitely a different dynamic since you spend a good bit of energy trying not to run into each other. Tonight I tackled some of World 2. The whole game is an amalgamation of previous Mario side-scrollers; while the predominant inspiration seems to be SMB1 for the original Nintendo, elements from most of the younger games exist as well. On the whole, though, it's a bit more difficult and complex than previous Mario side-scrollers. This complexity breeds a shortcoming: SMW for the SNES was particularly good at giving the player info boxes throughout the early maps to explain the rules of the environment and Mario's tools, but I've had to refer to the manual a few times to understand certain elements of SMBWii, which shouldn't be necessary.
